Inspiration
We were inspired by the idea that music is one of the oldest forms of community-building, but digital music creation tools often feel isolated or limited to people with technical expertise. We wanted to create something that makes collaborative music-making feel social, global, and inclusive. AXè was born from the idea of letting people connect through instruments and sounds from cultures all over the world, building music together in real time regardless of location.
What it does
AXè is a collaborative music-building platform where users can create, edit, and perform musical projects simultaneously through a shared link. It allows multiple people to contribute to the same composition in real time, layering sounds from instruments across different countries and musical traditions. The platform turns music creation into a shared, community-driven experience rather than a solo process.
How we built it
We built AXè using a web-based collaborative architecture with real-time syncing to support simultaneous editing. The frontend provides an interactive interface for arranging sounds and experimenting with global instruments, while shared-link functionality enables frictionless collaboration. We integrated curated instrument samples inspired by musical traditions from around the world and designed the platform to feel lightweight, social, and accessible.
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge was real-time collaboration—making sure multiple users could edit a project at once without conflicts or latency issues. Another challenge was structuring a diverse library of global instruments in a way that felt authentic and easy to use. We also had to balance building meaningful collaborative features with the limited time constraints of a hackathon.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud that we built a working platform that combines cultural exploration, music creation, and real-time collaboration into one experience. We’re especially proud of making collaboration as simple as sharing a link, and of centering instruments from around the world rather than defaulting to a narrow set of Western sounds. AXè feels like a tool for creating music together, not just making beats alone.
What we learned
We learned how challenging—and rewarding—it is to build for real-time collaboration. We also learned that designing for community means thinking beyond features and focusing on how people interact, contribute, and create together. Most importantly, we learned that cultural diversity can be a creative engine, not just a theme. What’s next for AXè Next, we want to expand AXè with live jam sessions, AI-assisted composition suggestions, integrated voice/video collaboration, and AR/VR concert experiences where people can perform together virtually. We also want to grow the global instrument library, support creators sharing public projects, and evolve AXè into a true community-powered music ecosystem.
