Inspiration
We were inspired by the fact many of us and our peers engage in social media activism, and we wished to create a better, more engaging method of interacting and supporting the world's issues. We wanted to make a more active base for users to influence their society and not just publicize their opinions.
What it does
Awareness.io allows users to submit causes: posts about problems they wish to address, whether on a personal, local, or global level. After signing in, they can do one of two things, create a cause or look at other causes. To create a cause, you go to the Create Cause tab and provide info on the subject including links, a summary, and a title. From there it will show up in the Find Cause tab and each cause will have a support and external links button, as well as an overview of the cause. The main purpose is to ensure that the site allows users to view current issues all in one spot rather than having to change sources, ensuring more awareness of each.
How we built it
We used React JS and Bootstrap, along with HTML and CSS to create the site and all of its components
Challenges we ran into
We had some trouble receiving user data and that got in the way of other developments, but the worst problem was simplifying the number of ideas we had down to one to ensure we had some product we could present.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We have a successful user registry system, as well as a card-based cause section that actively updates as people add more issues, and each card opens up with more information, allowing for awareness of many problems at once.
What we learned
It was our first time using React JS and Bootstrap and we were able to develop our knowledge of databases and queries. We both learned how to better coordinate our workflow and make a standalone product within a time limit.
What's next for Awareness.io
We will add more functional support and donation buttons, we want to add a filtering system to help users search for more specific problems, and we want to make our project have a little more color to attract a greater following.
