Inspiration
I was inspired by a recent viral video going around of a girl who was being chased by a guy in the gym. While she was being chased, she was trying to pull her phone out to call the police. I thought it may be a good idea to have an SOS message available right at your fingertips, like the elderly do, except more fashionable.
What it does
Instead of having to pull out a phone, this lets people be ready at any time with the rapid push of a button. They are able to wear a cool ring on their finger that doesn't look out of place, but also has the ability to keep them safe. Pressing the button 3 times sends an SOS message to selected contacts saying you feel unsafe and also shares your location with them.
How we built it
To do this, I used an Arduino connected to a push button along with a Twilio account. Using Python, I programmed the Arduino to send a text with all necessary information through the Twilio API whenever the button was pressed.
Challenges we ran into
I was quite new to hardware, and it was my first time working with an arduino, so it was a fun challenge.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This was my first hackathon project and I'm proud of the opportunity to develop my skills.
What we learned
Arduino, Python, Twilio API, Electrical Engineering
What's next for Aware
I'd like to miniaturize the project so it can actually be worn inconspicuously. From there, perhaps I'll create a new line of 3-d printed rings from scratch and attach wiring to them.
