Inspiration

My friend at college was contacted by someone who claimed to be his friend (in the context, he hadn't saved his friend's number, but this person claimed to be his friend) and asked for money because he was having a hard time. My friend, without knowing anything and because he felt bad towards his 'friend', he sent the money. Then, he just realized he made a big mistake when he cross checked the phone number and it wasn't actually his friend.

Hearing his story, it hit me that anyone can fall for this type of scam. But then, what about the elderly who aren't good with technology? Or people who lack digital literacy? Are they really just going to get played like that? We can't just sit back and let this happen. We have to step up and protect those who are vulnerable to these scams.

What it does

Our app works by combining OJK’s official list for illegal online loans (pinjol) with a crowdsourcing system for other types of scams, like shady links, spam calls demanding money, and so on. This way, users can search our database to verify or report anything suspicious. On top of that, the database features a Graph visualization to show how different entities are connected to one another. We also use AI-powered OCR to convert images into text, making it super easy to search our scammer database.

How we built it

To bring this app to life, we leveraged Gen-AI to build out the full-stack application. For our tech stack, we're using Nest.js and PostgreSQL, along with Kotlin for the mobile app.

Challenges we ran into

We spent hours stuck trying to nail down the best and most impactful idea for society. We kept polishing and filtering through different concepts, which ended up making the brainstorming phase take forever.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're incredibly proud of what we've achieved, landing on an idea that truly impacts all levels of society in the digital space, especially since everything is going digital nowadays. Plus, we actually managed to turn a complex concept into a monetizable digital product in under two days!

What we learned

We really learned the importance of time management while handling a massive project like this. We realized we had to strike a proper balance, splitting our time and focus evenly between shaping the idea and actually writing the code

What's next for AWAM

Moving forward, we're hoping to polish up the UI and fully build out that massive database for our scammer list. We're also looking to monetize the app by partnering with e-commerce platforms and banks here in Indonesia.
