Inspiration

Turns out, our team all play games. Yeah different games but we all play something, and it was cool seeing the variety - from aerial combat to horror. So we thought why not make a little something of our very own. Nothing beat the feeling of getting to do what you love with the one you cherish.

What it does

It's a game with multiple elements, but mainly solving puzzles and some JRPG-style combat.

One moment you're doing fine, and the next thing you know, you're now lost in a world no one know existed.

Experience dreams and emotions on a completely different perspective. Solve challenging puzzles, engage in twisted combat and more in Awaken Nightmares.

The game runs on dream logic, and slowly become less normal and more bizarre as you progresses. The puzzles takes place in rooms of a typical house. But the events that happen inside the game are certainly nothing close to typical.

There are secrets to uncover, enemies to slay, confront, or befriend. All while finding your foot in a world where the only thing that makes sense it that it doesn't. Obtain items, explore different paths and stories, and be prepared for surprises. Lots of it.

How we built it

We started out with all of us brainstorming ideas. Put them all into a google docs. We decided to use Godot as it is a rather simple engine to build upon, and most of us know it somewhat. We started with the tutorial room of the game, and the character model and expanded from there. One of us (Kaitlyn) worked on the assets, I (Penny) worked on the idea and the others helped write the code.

Challenges we ran into

Due to personal circumstances, two of us (Luna and Kuen-Yu) had to leave early, and I did not have prior Godot experience, meaning it was down to Kaitlyn to program it. I made myself useful in other ways, mainly writing this report and supporting my teammates whenever possible.

We also chose to tackle a project that isn't commonly done in hackathons - game development. But, even with these odds, we managed to get something out of it. And I believe it is my teammates' ability to work with others and willingness to carry out the project that made this possible.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We still managed to work together despite this being a project with a fair amount of obstacles, from members having to leave, unable to code, and this being our first Hackathon. We also worked together rather well and did our best to fill in the others' weaknesses, which I believe is an important thing for one to master. And even when we have only managed to complete a fraction of what we set ourselves out to do, the concept is there and it is promising.

What we learned

Honestly, quite a lot of things. First and possibly most, how to look out for one another in a group project. Especially when the stakes doesn't favor us, it becomes even more important to stick together.

Secondly, development skill. Through this, I learnt a bit about how to use Godot, and how to approach developing a game in it's early stages - idea forming, coding and planning for the long term.

We also learnt how to work with less than ideal circumstances. This is something that happens a lot in the tech world.

What's next for Awaken nightmares

Well, we have a 10 page document which does not cover every little aspect of the game. This is just the beginning and if it turns out well, this may very well be the start of something greater. Or should I say, something more nightmarish. OK I need to not be too dreamy. Heh.
