Inspiration

Often when black people go to the doctors office with a possible medical condition or due to a medical ailment they face, the doctor sometimes doesn't know how to treat them. This problem is also not always faced with medical professionals, even when a black person wants to use the web to search or textbooks, they often don't see people like them reflected in the content. This leads to medical racial bias, misdiagnosis, and possibly even death in certain situations. This should never be the case; black people and all people of color shouldn't have to face medical discrimination and fear not being treated properly.

What it does

Our website, allows users to input information about them like the racial/ethnic group they fall under, their age and gender. This allows the website to give the user images and information specific to them. There is a tab that allows users to search up medical information and data through a search engine, and they will receive data specific to them. Another tab allows users to search up images about medical conditions, and they will receive responses based on the data from the survey. The last feature of the website, is an option that allows certified medical professionals and patients with certain conditions to upload photos and images. The information they input will be categorized based off the patients information.

How we built it

We built the website using google sites. The surveys are done using google surveys; one survey for the user to find information, the second survey is to find information based off the data being inputted. We also built the site using two search engines; one for images and one for information that is uploaded.

Challenges we ran into

We wanted to use python code to gather the users data when they first enter the site, and allow them to navigate the site based off of the 4 digit code they receive. This python code ended up not being compatible with google sites and so we had to use google surveys. The code can be found below.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we were able to find a solution for a real-world problem that affects POC everyday. This solution if used correctly could be the difference between life and death, and we feel proud that we may help.

What we learned

We learned how to work together in a small amount of time, and we learned a lot about the injustices of the world.

What's next for AWAI

With further development, we will be able to make a user interface that is more cohesive. The code will allow the user to transition from tab to tab without inputting more information besides their condition.
