Inspiration

Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance (ESG) is an evaluation of a firm’s collective conscientiousness for social and environmental factors. Young professionals from the Millennial and GenZ generations are increasingly aware of the impact they have on the environment. They increasingly want their lifestyle choices and investment portfolio to reflect that as well. We have developed this application to help professionals choose ESG friendly companies and also get incentives at the same time .

What it does

Portfolio Management and investment based on the stocks, simultaneously giving good returns to the user. The application will recommend a list of companies with good ESG scores. Then, the users will have the choice to select the companies that meet their requirements. A list of incentives in relation to the ESG score for investment is calculated that may include things like gym memberships, bicycles, food coupons, health check-ups, free vaccinations in the current COVID time, etc.

How we built it

We leveraged the ESG dataset in order to accomplish this. React was used for the front-end web application development and SpringBoot for the back-end . An ML based stock price prediction algorithm was used to get the stock price prediction to get the stock investment returns. We also used Linear Programming to optimize our reward function to select the best recommendations for the user to invest.

Challenges we ran into

Solving a maximization optimization problem in 2 variables is NP-hard. Integrating the different parts in a short period of time gave rise to many bugs which needed to be fixed within a limited time frame.

Accomplishments that we’re proud of

We are very proud of the coordination shown among the team members with the tiring schedule and time constraints, and giving our best.

What we learned

Through the problem statement itself, we became aware of the ESG metrics for companies. It helped us to look at investments in a completely different perspective. We also learned about teamwork and project management.

What’s next?

Looking forward to participating with even more enthusiasm in the next HackDFW, and also waiting for one of the sponsors to hire us for Summer internships.
