Inspiration

Imagine coming home after a long day and simply asking your assistant to make your home comfortable, help troubleshoot an appliance, or prepare everything for bedtime. Managing a home often involves multiple apps, repetitive tasks, and scattered information.

We wanted to explore how Alexa+ and agentic AI could make home management more natural, proactive, and intelligent. This inspired us to build Aveniq, an AI-powered home management experience where people can interact conversationally, manage routines, troubleshoot appliance problems, and organize home maintenance through a unified interface.

Our vision is simple: make technology adapt to people, rather than making people adapt to technology.

What it does

Aveniq is an AI-powered home management assistant designed around conversational interactions and intelligent workflows.

Its key capabilities include:

Conversational Home Management: Interact with Aveniq using natural-language requests instead of navigating complex menus.

Smart Routines: Demonstrate workflows for morning routines, relaxation, and bedtime preparation.

Appliance Troubleshooting: Guide users through basic diagnostic questions and practical troubleshooting steps.

Maintenance Tracking: Help organize appliance issues, maintenance records, and warranty information.

Agentic Tool Integration: Use an MCP-based architecture to connect AI interactions with structured tools and actions.

Interactive Interface: Provide a visual interface for exploring home management features and viewing workflow results.

Aveniq explores how an Alexa+ experience can move beyond answering questions toward helping users complete practical, everyday tasks.

How we built it

We built Aveniq as a smart home management prototype that combines conversational AI, tool integration, and an interactive web experience.

The project includes:

MCP Server: Implements the Model Context Protocol using Streamable HTTP and protocol version 2025-11-25, enabling compatible clients to discover and invoke supported tools.

Agentic Workflows: Organizes home management tasks into structured operations for appliance assistance, maintenance, and routines.

Interactive Web Experience: Provides a simulated Alexa+-style interface where users can explore conversational interactions and observe workflow results.

AI Integration: Incorporates Amazon Bedrock integration to support AI-powered interactions.

MCP Apps: Supports interactive UI experiences associated with tool workflows.

AWS Deployment Configuration: Includes AWS CDK infrastructure configuration to support deployment.

We designed the experience around a simple principle: users should be able to express what they need in everyday language, while the system translates that request into an appropriate workflow and presents the result clearly.

Challenges we ran into

One of our biggest challenges was bridging natural-language conversations with structured tool execution. A user might ask to make a room comfortable or troubleshoot a washing machine, but the system needs to interpret the request, identify the relevant workflow, and communicate the result clearly.

We also had to consider:

MCP integration: Structuring tools and communication around the MCP protocol.

Conversational experience: Making interactions feel natural rather than like a sequence of rigid commands.

Simulation versus physical control: Demonstrating smart home workflows without assuming that real appliances are connected.

Reliable responses: Ensuring that the assistant communicates what an action can do and avoids claiming that an operation succeeded without a corresponding result.

End-to-end integration: Bringing the server, AI integration, interface, and deployment configuration together into one coherent experience.

These challenges helped us focus on making the experience understandable, practical, and extensible.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to have developed Aveniq as more than a conventional chatbot concept. It brings together conversational interaction, an MCP-based tool architecture, and a visual smart home management experience.

Our key accomplishments include:

Building an MCP server using Streamable HTTP.

Creating a simulated Alexa+-style web experience.

Bringing appliance troubleshooting, maintenance tracking, and routine-based workflows into one project.

Integrating AI capabilities with structured tool interactions.

Exploring how agentic AI can support practical, everyday home management.

Most importantly, Aveniq represents our vision of a home assistant that helps people move from asking questions to accomplishing tasks.

What we learned

Building Aveniq strengthened our understanding of MCP, agentic AI, conversational interfaces, and the integration of AI systems with structured tools.

We learned that an effective AI assistant requires more than a capable language model. It also needs well-defined tools, clear workflows, reliable action results, and an interface that helps users understand what is happening.

We also learned the importance of distinguishing between a simulated demonstration and real-world device control, especially when home security and physical devices are involved.

This project reinforced our belief that the future of AI assistants lies in combining natural conversation with reliable, context-aware actions.

What's next for Aveniq — Alexa+ Powered Smart Home Management & Automation

Our next goal is to evolve Aveniq from a smart home management prototype into a more personalized and capable home assistant.

Our roadmap includes:

Real Smart Device Integration: Connect compatible lights, thermostats, sensors, and appliances through supported smart home platforms.

Deeper Alexa+ Integration: Expand the conversational experience and explore additional Alexa+ capabilities.

Personalized Routines: Adapt routines to user preferences, schedules, and household needs.

Proactive Maintenance: Use appliance history and available sensor data to identify potential maintenance needs.

Home Knowledge Base: Organize appliance manuals, warranties, troubleshooting history, and maintenance records.

Safety and Permissions: Require appropriate confirmation for sensitive actions and provide clear feedback about execution status.

Expanded MCP Tools: Add more integrations and workflows as supported services become available.

Our long-term vision is to make Aveniq a unified AI home manager that helps people manage their homes with less effort, greater clarity, and more confidence.
