Inspiration
The inspiration for SkillSwap came from real-life experiences. I’ve seen people around me—students, freelancers, neighbors—who have incredible talents but often can’t afford the services they need. Instead of money, they’d often help each other out informally: a designer making a poster in exchange for math tutoring, or a baker trading cakes for photography. That simple idea of exchanging skills stuck with me. I wanted to turn it into a real, working platform that empowers people to give and receive—without spending a rupee.
What it does
SkillSwap is a lightweight web app where users can: Offer a skill they’re good at Request a skill they need Browse local offers by other users Connect and exchange talents, building real value through community collaboration It’s like a digital barter system—but more organized, beautifully designed, and built for trust.
How we built it
We used Bolt.new for the entire front-end UI and workflows. Supabase powers the backend, storing skill listings in a secure, real-time database. The UI was designed to be clean, responsive, and community-friendly, using Bolt’s native styling tools. Forms are connected directly to Supabase via Bolt’s visual workflows. Skill posts are displayed using repeaters, styled with custom icons and soft UI to make the experience feel smooth and modern.
Challenges we ran into
Working within a limited timeframe was intense, so we focused on shipping a clean MVP with core features. Connecting Supabase to Bolt required careful field mapping and public permissions setup since we didn’t want to require user accounts. Keeping the UI polished while working fast was a creative challenge, but Bolt’s drag-and-drop system helped a lot.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built a fully functional skill exchange platform in just a few hours Stayed 100% inside Bolt.new with no external frontend code Made a tool that can genuinely help local communities Completed our submission with a clear story, clean UI, and real-world impact
What we learned
Bolt.new is incredibly powerful for rapid prototyping and real deployment. With the right idea, even a simple UI can deliver strong value when designed with empathy. Supabase is a great fit for real-time, no-auth applications—perfect for fast builds. You don’t need complex tech to solve meaningful problems.
What's next for SkillSwap
We plan to: Add user authentication to create personal dashboards Allow messaging between users Enable city-based filtering and geolocation Launch the platform publicly and test it with a small local community This project is just the start. The vision is to build a true community economy—where skills are currency, and support is mutual.
