Inspiration

A couple of weeks ago, I had the chance to talk to someone very involved in the Chicago Public School system, and he told me about how most students with disabilities such as being blind or deaf were completely taken out of the public school system to instead be homeschooled, but when they returned to public school they were significantly behind the other children (even including the fact that it was "zoom school"). To combat this issue, I decided to create an app that makes it possible for hearing and visually impaired students to participate in school online, giving them the chance to interact with their peers without the losses caused by homeschool.

What it does

Ava is a video calling portal that provides multiple accessibility tools absent from conventional video call applications such as Zoom. Not only does it provide accessibility features such as dimming and inverting of video feeds (allowing visually impaired students to view documents without having to strain their eyes), it also provides a custom-trained AI detector for the detection of American Sign Language to give these students a way to communicate comfortably and in real time over video calls.
