Inspiration
Long PDFs (manuals, reports, guides) are painful to navigate. I wanted a tool that turns one big PDF into clean, chapter-sized pieces with notes, without uploading private documents anywhere.
What it does
AutoPDF Orchestrator runs 100% in the browser:
- Drag & drop a PDF, preview it with thumbnails and zoom
- Smart Split: detects sections from bookmarks, or falls back to the table-of-contents page
- Local summaries and keywords for every section (no cloud, no API key)
- Export everything as a ZIP: split PDFs, Markdown notes and an HTML notes page
How I built it
React 18 + TypeScript + Vite, Tailwind, pdf.js for rendering/text, pdf-lib for splitting, JSZip for export, Vitest for tests, deployed on Vercel. Every feature was developed spec-first in Kiro.
Challenges
Resolving PDF outline destinations to real page numbers, PDFs without bookmarks (solved with a TOC fallback), and getting readable extractive summaries from messy PDF text.
What I learned
Writing requirements and a design before code made the AI agent far more reliable, and hooks kept the tests passing on every change.
What's next
Optional LLM summaries, manual page-range editing, and merge support.## Inspiration
