AutoNote

A productivity app that saves you time in note-taking by letting you skim over articles and dense information more easily, using generated summaries and sentiments within the wording.

Inspiration

We were inspired by the ever-evolving technologies of today, including Chat-GPT and the benefits they can give to everyone in the near future.

What it does

As our project name implies, our app allows users to automatically generate notes from text-based content. Our Chrome extension lets a user select any amount of text (like from a news article) and by right-clicking to open the context menu and pressing "Save this Selection", it gets sent to their private account on our website where it gets summarized into a 300-word-or-less automated summary, as well as giving it a score of "happy, neutral, or angry/sad" to make reading the information easier to work through.

How we built it

  • Auth0 to synchronize the client and their extension with their notes
  • MongoDB and Google Cloud Compute Engine to have the user be able to access their notes online anywhere with internet
  • Chrome Extensions to easily allow the user to integrate AutoNote into their workflow
  • GitHub and Trello to keep track of our progress throughout the entire hackathon
  • Google Cloud Natural Language to generate sentiments for our users' notes
  • Rust and the rust-bert NLP crate to generate summaries for our users' notes

Challenges we ran into

Having enough energy and ideas to add, as we were only a group of two people, we needed to be willing to give more into the project to have a satisfying completion. Of course, we also ran into tons of technical challenges which were hard to overcome, but by giving it our all and not getting discouraged, we persevered.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are very proud of how much work we got done, and the overall quality of our project. We are also very proud of how much we learned, as we used a lot of technologies we have never touched before and integrated them into our project.

What we learned

We learned many technologies, like learned postgresql, noSQL, and many things about javascript, HTML, CSS, and especially project design and management. In the beginning of our project, we thought we were planning too much, but in the end we were even proud of how much that initial planning helped us throughout.

What's next for AutoNote

We hope to continue AutoNote to include more services than simply be a article saver, and we hope to include the ability to edit and create blank notes, and maybe invite others for collaborative research!
