Inspiration

Millions of commuters and travelers across the United States suffer from rigorous traffic delays that are only exacerbated during long holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. An autonomous vehicle network could prove extremely beneficial to mitigate such delays.

What we learned

An autonomous vehicle network on a basic one-lane road with five cars could reduce traffic delays by approximately 15% in our simulation.

How we built the project

Using a Java IDE, we constructed two classes: Car and Intersection. We first programmed the accessor, modifier, and Paint methods in the Car class along with its variables. Then, we coded the Intersection with a List of five adjacent cars. A backdrop of a one-lane road and a timer from start to finish was implemented to determine traffic efficiency.

Challenges

Our primary challenge was trying to mimic human-car reactions & interactions in the intersection class, which were both in the distance() and followAndTrail() methods. Other challenges were basic Java syntax and the run() method.
