Modular Field Drone System

An example of a configuration of the modular field drone system

Inspiration

Consumer electronics have already developed plug-and-play architectures and accessible repairability. Similarly, many military platforms have successfully adopted modular and standardized design principles.

We see a clear opportunity to apply these same concepts to drone systems, enabling better logistics, mobility, and adaptability.

What it does

The Modular Field Drone System is a drone solution to increase adaptability to complex conditions while decreasing the logistical burden. The system is designed to be modular with the plug-and-fight principle. Drones can be adapted with minimal technical knowledge, without extensive equipment, in mobile all-style conditions. The logistical strain is eased, as specialised drones can be replaced with standardised drone frames and modules. How we built it

We researched the possibilities of the technical system for the modular system. We also created a physical prototype using an Arduino microcontroller, showcasing the functionality.

Challenges we ran into

Due to the time constraints, we were not able to realize an actual technical prototype implementing the modularity functions using the protocols found during the research.

Accomplishments

We have developed a plan for the technical system. That includes the modularity and plug-and-fight capabilities. We have developed a visual and practical mock-up of the modular drone system. A picture of the technical system.

What we learned

There is an opportunity for our proposed drone solution. The Modular Field Drone System could be developed and used in a military setting.

What's next for the Modular Field Drone System

To develop a full catalog of frames tailored to different needs and mission types.

To become the supplier of the platform on which the Latvian ecosystem based it's developments.

To influence the standards of NATO member states by leveraging Latvia's leadership position in the Drone Coalition.
