Inspiration
We were inspired by Mars rovers and their ability to traverse difficult terrain and do certain tasks such as picking up objects.
What it does
Our project drives around a defined space, detects obstacles in front of it, and safely navigates around the area as it picks up objects as needed by the user.
How we built it
We planned on using a webcam, LiDAR, ultrasonic sensors, and OpenCV, to identify obstacles and objects on the ground to pick up. A robotic arm would be used to collect objects. The system would run on a Raspberry Pi + Arduino architecture, combining onboard vision, sensor fusion, motion control, and autonomous task logic.
Challenges we ran into
Our main challenges came from sourcing hardware, downloading software, and running out of time.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of our flexibility and creativity after not being able to obtain certain necessary hardware such as motors and raspberry pi. We had been unable to obtain the motor components needed for our original design for a rocker bogie suspension so we pivoted to a four wheel design that only needed one motor.
What we learned
We learned how to use certain electrical components that were previously new to us as well as gaining a deeper understanding certain mechanisms that we had never built from scratch before.
