An automatic soil moisture-based surface irrigation system was developed for basin layout.
• Wireless communication was established between soil moisture sensor and check gate using LoRa wireless network protocol and GSM.
• The number of sensors and the suitable location of soil moisture sensors was determined for basin layout.
• Nine irrigation events were observed to assess the system performance in bare soil.
• The irrigation application efficiency was improved up to 86.6% with automation
