Inspiration
Garden management takes in a lot of effort when it comes to watering the plants and checking the plants. Therefore we want to make it easier for people who can't be in the garden often and for people who can't really contribute to caring for and managing the garden because of several reasons like being too far from it.
What it does
This system consists of two parts, security, and watering. For security, the buzzer will beep with the red LED turned on to alert people when the smoke detector detects fire in the garden. Also, the sprinkler on the ceiling will start functioning to extinguish the fire following the buzzer. For watering, when the moisture sensor detects a certain low level of moisture in the soil, the moisture sensor will notify the system and automatic watering will be initiated as the sprinkler will start watering the plants. Moreover, the green LED will turn on, indicating that the soil is moisturized, or the green LED will turn off which indicates that the soil is not moisturized.
How we built it
We first used unity to build the 3d blueprint for the model and the system which then is resized so that we can demonstrate the system with models that we can afford to build. We then used Arduino along with an H-bridge, an 130 motor, a soil moisture sensor, a servo motor (which is modified to a motor), an MQ-2 smoke sensor, LED lights, and a buzzer. Using Arduino, when the soil moisture detects data higher than 520, the valve connected with the water tank is opened, making water flow to the sprinkler which then sprays the water to the plants. However, when the soil data lower than 450, the valve connected to the water tank is closed, making sure that the sprinkler stops spraying water. For the smoke detector, if the data is higher than 390, then the RED light will turn on with the buzzer alerting people.
Challenges we ran into
During the project, one of our member's laptops broke and it took us 2 days to fix the problem. It slowed down our project progression a lot and the smoke sensor also broke along with problems found with the moisture sensor. Also, using unity to create the 3D model took a while since none of us are experienced in unity.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the efforts we have put into the project as we have tried our best and gave all we had. As newbies, we worked as much as possible together online as it is difficult to communicate with two different time zones.
What we learned
We have learned to always have a backup plan for the project as some of the components were broken at the last minute of the event.
What's next for Automatic Garden Watering System
We plan to apply solar energy with the system to lower energy costs and increase environmental sustainability. Also, we plan to add robots for automatic collection and seeding, and planting.ion and seeding, and planting.
