Automated Smart Crosswalk for Pedestrians!!!

Inspiration:

The inspiration for our Smart Crosswalk project came from the alarming rise in pedestrian accidents at busy intersections and near schools. We recognized the urgent need to enhance pedestrian safety while ensuring a seamless traffic flow. Our goal was to develop an innovative solution that integrates with existing infrastructure, focusing on the safety of vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and individuals with mobility aids.

What it does:

Our Smart Crosswalk enhances pedestrian safety through several innovative features:

  • Retractable Mechanism: The crosswalk physically elevates when activated by pedestrians, increasing visibility and safety.
  • Solar-Powered Operation: The system operates on solar power with a reliable battery backup, ensuring functionality 24/7, even in bad weather conditions.
  • Integration with Traffic Signals: The crosswalk is connected to nearby traffic signals, coordinating light changes to improve safety during crossing.
  • Emergency Vehicle Detection: The system uses infrared and RFID sensors placed 10 meters before the crosswalk to detect approaching emergency vehicles. It prevents activation until the vehicle passes, and if pedestrians are already crossing, the crosswalk lights fade to give way.
  • Sound Notifications: Installed sound notifications alert pedestrians when it is safe to cross, enhancing accessibility.

How we built it

We built the Smart Crosswalk using a combination of mechanical and electronic components:

  • Hydraulic System: We chose a hydraulic mechanism for the crosswalk elevation, providing smooth and reliable operation.
  • Sensors: Programmable infrared sensors detect pedestrian presence and completion, triggering the retractable mechanism.
  • Power System: Solar panels combined with a battery backup ensure reliable operation in all weather conditions.
  • User-Centric Design: We prioritized accessibility, ensuring the system is easy to use for all pedestrians, including those with disabilities.

Challenges we ran into

Throughout the development process, we faced several challenges:

  • Technical Integration: Ensuring that the hydraulic mechanism worked reliably with the sensors and traffic signals required extensive testing and fine-tuning.
  • Weather Resilience: Designing the system to function effectively in various weather conditions, especially for the solar panels, was a significant concern.
  • User Accessibility: Creating a solution that is intuitive for all pedestrians, particularly vulnerable populations, necessitated thorough testing and user feedback.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We take pride in several key achievements:

  • Successfully integrating sustainable technology with safety features, demonstrating a practical approach to pedestrian protection.
  • Developing a system that is adaptable to different environments and traffic scenarios, ensuring broader applicability.
  • Striking a balance between innovation and practicality, making our solution both affordable and low maintenance.

What we learned

This project taught us valuable lessons, including:

  • Collaborative Teamwork: Leveraging each team member's strengths was crucial to our success.
  • Importance of User Feedback: Engaging with potential users helped us refine our design and functionality, ensuring it meets real-world needs.
  • Technology Integration: Understanding how to effectively combine hardware and software to create a cohesive and responsive system was key.

What's next for Public Safety and Emergency Response

Looking ahead, we plan to:

  • Further develop the Smart Crosswalk by integrating real-time data analysis to monitor pedestrian flow and enhance traffic management.
  • Explore AI capabilities for predictive analytics, which could further improve emergency response times and traffic safety.
  • Work towards scaling our solution to various cities, contributing to safer urban environments and promoting public safety awareness.
