Inspiration
During this covid-19 pandemic situation we all switched to Online mode of education and our examination mode also shifted from subjective type to objective type. In order to make our learning more fruitful one requires to do assessment, learning is not complete without assessment. As “Modern problem requires modern solution” so we are making an automated MCQ generator which will be beneficial not only for students but also teachers for generating MCQ in short period of time and also with high accuracy.
What it does
Question is an essential tool to assess the knowledge or understanding of a learner. Assessment is crucial in learning and question is essential for assessment. Multiple choice question (MCQ) is the most widespread form of a question for various levels of assessment. MCQs have many advantages including quick evaluation, less testing time, consistent scoring, and the possibility of an electronic evaluation. Many examinations use MCQ based question papers through a computerized environment. However, manual preparation of MCQs is time-consuming and costly. So in our project, the emphasis is on generating a type of objective questions multiple choice questions. A MCQ is composed of three core components. These are, Stem Key Distractor The stem is also known as item or question sentence. Fundamentally this is the sentence from which the question is formed. So, a question without the alternatives can be treated as a stem. It can be in an assertive or interrogative form. The key (also named as target word) is the correct answer of the question. Distractors are the set of wrong answers or choices given along with the correct answer to befuddle the examinee. For example, consider the following MCQ. The largest planet in our solar system is –––. 1) Earth 2) Jupiter 3) Venus 4) Neptune. The stem of this MCQ is “The largest planet in our solar system is”. It could be presented in question form: “What is the largest planet of our solar system?”. Four choices are given in the question. Among these, the correct answer is ‘Jupiter’. So, this is the key. The rest three choices are the distractors. The major challenge in preparing MCQ is the need for good distractors, i.e. distractors should appear as a plausible answer to the question even to a student with good knowledge on the domain. At the same time, it should not be an alternate answer. Moreover, a well-written MCQ should contain enough information to answer the question. Hence to reduce the effort and time required for generating MCQs, our project will generate MCQS automatically using different algorithms of NLP.
