Inspiration
One of our teammates forgot to take their medicines on time and required a reminder. Many people go through this daily, and it is necessary that they take these medicines on time. This device can make patients who are living alone more independent, as well as act as a reminder for children to take their medication.
What it does
At certain intervals, the device starts beeping at the time the user sets, for example, every 5 or 6 hours. For the purpose of this demonstration, we set the time to 20 seconds. The device beeps 4 times, indicating that it is time to take the medication, and once the box is opened, a light detection mechanism turns the beeper off, resetting the cycle. The beeper beeps again at a certain interval.
How we built it
We built it mostly using the Arduino Kits and the Arduino coding program. We also used some handy cardboard.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into some challenges during the creation of this project. Our concept idea was also that the top of the box would display a screen with the words "Take Meds" and the time; however, we had difficulty connecting the screen and presenting the words.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully coded the buzzer to stop buzzing when the system's light turned on and beeped four times at a certain interval.
What we learned
We learned how to conduct advanced coding on an Arduino, which we were not super proficient with, and we developed a novel understanding of how codes and circuits work.
What's next for Automated Pill Reminder (APR)
Our future idea was that this device could be turned into a smaller contraption that could easily be attached to any pill box the patient uses. As such, we would also like the LED screen to display time and words of encouragement.
