Inspiration
Hostel management involves handling student details, room allocation, complaints, facility bookings, and utility usage. We noticed that these activities are often managed manually or using separate records, which makes it difficult to maintain and monitor everything efficiently. This inspired us to develop a centralized web-based system for managing hostel information and monitoring electricity and water consumption.
How We Built It
We designed the project as a web application using React.js for the frontend, Node.js and Express.js for the backend, and MongoDB for storing hostel-related data. We first identified the major requirements and designed the system architecture. Then, we developed the dashboard and different modules such as student management, room occupancy, complaints, facility bookings, electricity monitoring, and water monitoring. We connected the frontend with the backend using REST APIs and used charts and summary cards to present utility consumption data clearly.
What We Learned
Through this project, we learned how to develop a full-stack web application and how the frontend, backend, APIs, and database work together. We also improved our knowledge of React.js, Node.js, Express.js, MongoDB, REST APIs, Git, and GitHub. We learned how to divide tasks within a team, integrate our work, debug errors, and design a system based on real-world requirements.
Challenges Faced
One of the main challenges was coordinating the frontend and backend development and ensuring that the API responses matched the frontend requirements. We also faced issues while setting up the backend, connecting the database, and integrating different modules. Another challenge was deciding how to represent electricity and water consumption in a simple and useful way. We solved these challenges through testing, debugging, discussion with our team members, and making improvements based on the project requirements.
Outcome
The project provides a centralized platform for hostel management and utility monitoring. It helps administrators organize hostel information and view electricity and water consumption through dashboards and visualizations. The system can also be extended in the future with IoT-based meters for automated real-time utility monitoring.
