Electricity wastage is a significant problem in Indian households. If addressed, it can lead to substantial savings in energy costs and have a positive impact on the environment. Research indicates that approximately 20 to 30% of electricity is wasted in an average Indian household. By reducing this wastage, households can save a considerable amount of electricity, which not only helps save money but also benefits the planet. The environmental benefits include reducing the carbon footprint and easing the strain on the national grid. Addressing electricity wastage is crucial for both economic and environmental sustainability.

Seamless Control with AutoMate:

The AutoMate device offers seamless control of household devices in various innovative ways. For instance, you can turn lights on and off by clapping once, and switch on fans by clapping twice. Additionally, you can use an app to control these devices remotely. AutoMate is also compatible with popular voice assistants like Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, making it even more convenient.

Smart Tiles with Piezoelectric Plates:

We have introduced smart tiles that incorporate piezoelectric plates to convert potential energy into electrical energy. Simply walking over these tiles generates electricity, which can be used to power lights and other appliances, reducing overall electricity consumption. While similar products exist in countries like Japan, our design is significantly more cost-efficient, reducing the price from ₹7000 per tile to under ₹200. This affordability is achieved by using cheaper piezoelectric plates and optimizing the design for home use.

Light Sensing Feature:

Another special feature of AutoMate is its ability to sense the amount of light in a room. If there is sufficient natural light, the system will prevent the lights from turning on automatically when someone enters. However, if the user still requires the light, they can easily turn it on or off by clapping.

Innovative IR Sensor System:

We have implemented a unique double IR sensor system on each door frame, with sensors placed on both the inner and outer sides. This setup accurately detects whether a person is entering or exiting a room, unlike other systems that require user input for this information. This innovation simplifies operation and enhances efficiency compared to existing solutions from companies like Bajaj Smart Home.

How we built it

AutoMate is designed with precision and affordability in mind. Built using highly accurate and cost-efficient sensors, it fits perfectly within the budget of middle-class households. At the heart of this device is the versatile ESP32 microcontroller, which offers seamless WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity. This ensures robust performance and easy integration with various home appliances.

Complementing this hardware is a custom-made app that allows users to remotely control all their home devices, providing convenience and efficiency. With AutoMate, not only do you automate your home, but you also contribute to significant electricity savings, all while staying within an affordable range. It's the perfect blend of technology, efficiency, and sustainability.

Challenges we ran into

A significant challenge we encountered was making the smart tiles cost-efficient. Currently, similar products on the market are priced at around ₹7000 per tile. However, we've managed to bring the cost of our tiles down to under ₹200 each. We achieved this by using piezoelectric plates to convert potential energy into electric energy, ensuring both affordability and efficiency. This innovative approach allows us to offer a high-quality, cost-effective solution that is accessible to a broader range of households.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm proud that I was able to complete this project within the time limit and ensure it works seamlessly. Making it so cost-efficient and user-friendly is a great achievement, and it's incredibly satisfying to see it all come together successfully. This accomplishment demonstrates the hard work and dedication put into creating a product that can truly make a difference in everyday lives.

What we learned

This project has been an incredible learning experience. I learned many things, like bootstrapping a website and using the ESP32 to achieve impressive functionality. Most importantly, working within a deadline has taught me valuable lessons in time management and efficiency. Seeing the project come to life and knowing it can make a positive impact is immensely rewarding

What's next for AutoMate

My next aim for AutoMate is to add more functionalities to the device, making it even better and more precise. I plan to expand its compatibility to work seamlessly with a wider range of devices, such as air conditioners, televisions, and more. This will enhance the overall smart home experience, providing even greater convenience and energy efficiency for users. The goal is to continually improve AutoMate, ensuring it remains a cutting-edge solution for home automation and energy conservation.
