About the Project — AutoDoc AI

Inspiration

As a developer, I’ve noticed that documentation is often the most overlooked part of a project. Many GitHub repositories either lack a proper README or have outdated documentation, which makes onboarding and collaboration difficult. Writing documentation manually is time-consuming and often deprioritized, especially during hackathons or rapid development.

This inspired me to build AutoDoc AI — a tool that automatically generates professional README documentation directly from a GitHub repository, allowing developers to focus more on building and less on writing boilerplate docs.

What I Built

AutoDoc AI is an AI-powered API with a simple web interface that:

  • Accepts a GitHub repository URL
  • Analyzes the repository structure using the GitHub API
  • Generates a well-structured README.md in Markdown format using an LLM

The generated README includes:

  • Project overview
  • Tech stack
  • Installation steps
  • Usage instructions
  • Folder structure
  • Future improvement suggestions

How I Built It

The project is built with a clear separation between backend logic and frontend presentation:

  • Backend: Node.js and Express

    • Handles API requests
    • Fetches repository data via the GitHub REST API
    • Processes repository structure
    • Sends structured context to an LLM for README generation
  • Frontend: React

    • Single-page interface
    • Allows users to input a GitHub repository URL
    • Displays the generated README for preview and copying

The backend API was designed in a modular way so it can be reused as a standalone service or integrated into other developer tools.

Challenges Faced

One of the main challenges was handling different repository structures while keeping the AI prompt concise and effective. Another challenge was ensuring the backend setup was stable and correctly ordered, as middleware and routing order in Express is critical.

Debugging environment and configuration issues also required careful attention, especially when setting up ES modules and development tooling. These challenges helped reinforce best practices for building clean and maintainable APIs.

What I Learned

Through this project, I learned:

  • How to design a developer-focused API from scratch
  • How to integrate third-party APIs effectively
  • The importance of incremental development and testing
  • How AI can be used practically to solve real developer pain points

Most importantly, I learned how to scope a project realistically while still delivering meaningful functionality.

Future Scope

AutoDoc AI can be extended to:

  • Generate API documentation
  • Create architecture diagrams
  • Support multiple programming languages in more depth
  • Integrate with CI pipelines or GitHub Actions

AutoDoc AI aims to make documentation effortless, accessible, and automatic.
