AutoCom is an Expo mobile app for fall detection, caregiver alerts, and SOS escalation.

Why I built this

I am an SMA Type 3 patient, which means I depend on my parents for basic activities. When they need to go to work or buy groceries, they usually leave their phone with me in case I need something. Sometimes it slips out of my hands, leaving me with no way to contact them.

Because of that, one of my parents often has to stay with me. They cannot always do that, and I do not want to take away their freedom. So, with help from my AI friends, I built AutoCom: a way to alert my caregivers if my phone falls and I need help.

How I built it

I used expo-modules and firebase

Challenges I ran into

It was hard to formulate phone falling. I came up with a short mathematical equation and plugged that in a coding agent with starting algorithm written to make app building easy.

Accomplishments that I am proud of

  1. Got escalation engine right
  2. Made a custom algorithm for fall detection for my usecase.

What we learned

Physics of falling, slipping, and sliding is different for every person. The algorithm needs to be custom build for each.

What's next for AutoCom

Impement diffrent trigger mechanisms which don't rely on this brutal physics. Camera monitoring? maybe
