Inspiration

After recently finishing autumn semester mid-term examinations, the tedious process of manually navigating academic portals to check and save results became apparent. The inspiration was twofold: to build a productivity tool that eliminates the friction for students dealing with clunky university interfaces, and to provide college management with a streamlined, automated way to fetch and compile bulk result sheets for major competitive exams like JEE and NEET for their student body.

What it does

Auto-Marksheet-Generator is an automated Python pipeline. It bypasses manual browser navigation by injecting and parsing HTML data, extracting key academic performance metrics, and dynamically compiling the information into a highly formatted, locally saved PDF marksheet. Beyond individual use, it serves as a powerful administrative tool for college management, capable of processing multiple roll numbers to automatically generate standardized scorecards for massive national exams like JEE and NEET, eliminating hours of manual data entry.

How we built it

The core logic was intially drafted in Google Collab and then transitioned to a local Windows environment. It relies on requests and beautifulsoup4 for data extraction and HTML parsing. For the document generation, the project uses pdfkit interfaced with a local wkhmtltopdf executable to render the parsed HTML into a polished pdf document.

Challenges we ran into

Configuring the local Windows development environment presented several hurdles. We had to troubleshoot system PATH variables to ensure command-line execution, resolve Microsoft C++ Build Tool dependency errors by stripping out unnecessary lxml parsers, and manually map the wkhtmltopdf executable path directly within the Python scipt to get the final pdf to compile.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Successfully migrating a cloud-based script into a fully functional local executable. We are especially proud of implementing a mock-login and HTML injection system, which allows the pipeline to generate perfect PDF marksheets even when the actual academic portal is offline. We are also proud of the project's scalability—realizing its dual-use potential as both a student productivity hack and a high-value administrative tool for colleges tracking JEE/NEET ranks.

What we learned

This project was a deep dive into Windows environment variables and dependency management. We learned how Python libraries interface with underlying system software, how to debug complex terminal build errors, and how to properly configure a requirements.txt file for seamless deployment.

What's next for Auto Marksheet Generator

Future updates will include a Graphical User Interface (GUI) to make the tool accessible to non-technical users, automated GPA trend calculations, and an "Institutional Mode" tailored for college administrators. This mode will allow batch processing of JEE, NEET, and university results, automatically organizing hundreds of student scorecards into a single, manageable database.
