Inspiration
AutiBuddy Project Story 💡 Inspiration AutiBuddy was born from a simple, powerful idea: every child deserves a friend who understands them especially those who see and feel the world differently. After witnessing how many children with autism struggle to access engaging, personalized support, we set out to build a tool that feels less like therapy, and more like friendship.
What it does
What It Does AutiBuddy is an AI-powered learning companion designed to help children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) improve:
Speech and communication
Emotional recognition
Daily routines and behavior regulation
Children interact with expressive avatars that guide them through speech exercises, facial mimicry, stories, and games. Parents and therapists can monitor progress through intuitive real-time dashboards.
How we built it
Frontend: React (web dashboards)
Backend: Laravel, mysql
AI/ML Integration:
Speech-to-text via OpenAI Whisper
Facial detection via MediaPipe
Avatar generation using D-ID API
Modular architecture for scale and customization
Challenges we ran into
Designing interfaces that are sensory-friendly yet visually engaging
Tuning speech recognition for young and neurodivergent users
Creating avatars that balance realism with child-friendliness
Ensuring the app feels like a buddy, not a bot
Accomplishments that we're proud of
What we learned
Empathy-led design is essential when building for neurodiverse users
Small moments of joy (like a child mimicking a smiling avatar) have big impact
AI can amplify human care when applied thoughtfully
Personalization is not optional it’s transformative
What's next for AutiBuddy
Add multilingual support for global access
Enable offline mode for areas with limited connectivity
