Inspiration

Living in California, I saw friends struggle to buy/sell pre-owned luxury—fear of fakes, opaque pricing, and no accountability. As a sustainable fashion advocate, I also wanted to quantify the eco-benefit of secondhand shopping. That’s when SecondHandLuxury was born: fix trust gaps, add transparency, and center sustainability for US/EU luxury lovers.

What it does

It’s a full-stack marketplace for pre-owned luxury (handbags, watches, jewelry). Buyers get AI-verified authenticity, fair market pricing, and track their carbon footprint; sellers access hassle-free consignment, real-time status tracking, and clear payout calculations (20% platform fee, net payout = Sale Price × 0.8). Escrow payments protect both parties until delivery confirmation.

How we built it

We started with user research across NYC, LA, London, and Berlin to map pain points. Built the frontend with React (responsive for desktop/mobile) and designed dashboards for buyers/sellers. Backend: Node.js + MongoDB for data storage, AWS for hosting. Integrated TensorFlow for AI image authentication, Stripe for escrow payments, and Chart.js for pricing/eco-impact visuals.

Challenges we ran into

Calibrating the AI authentication model to accurately verify luxury items (variations in condition/lighting) took weeks of testing with real luxury goods. We also had to design escrow logic that aligned with US/EU financial regulations—navigating cross-border payment rules was tricky.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Creating a seamless flow from consignment submission to payout: sellers get instant AI pre-verification, buyers see clear eco-impact metrics, and the escrow system has zero buyer fees. The platform’s eco-summary dashboard has resonated with sustainable shoppers—users love seeing their cumulative carbon reduction.

What we learned

We deepened our understanding of luxury market dynamics in US/EU regions, and how to balance technical rigor (AI authentication) with user experience. We also learned that sustainability metrics aren’t just “nice to have”—they’re a core driver for our target demographic (28-45yo professionals).

What's next for this project

Expand to include EU language support (French, German, Italian) to serve more European users. Integrate live expert authentication for high-value items, and build a mobile app (beyond responsive web). We also plan to add seller analytics to help users optimize pricing based on real-time market trends.
