Inspiration
Ausencia was created for the latest GEN:48, a competition where Contanimation is already a veteran studio with three laurels earned in past editions. We wanted to explore a deeply local Spanish story — a costumbrista tone without stereotypes — something that older AI tools struggled to convey. The short also became an opportunity to push our signature anireal aesthetic even further: stylized, cartoon-leaning proportions combined with a photographic, cinematic finish.
What it does
Ausencia follows a woman who spends the night keeping vigil over the body of her late husband, a retired filmmaker. The film blends domestic realism with Contanimation’s anireal visual style to explore grief, memory and emotional residue.
This release is a fully remastered version of the original GEN:48 short: updated visuals, refined performances (via ElevenLabs and Act Two), improved dialogue delivery and a more cohesive tone that aligns with the directors’ intended vision.
How we built it
We used a hybrid workflow combining generative experimentation with precise artistic control: – ElevenLabs and Act Two for believable dialogue and emotional performance direction. – Iterative visual refinement to enhance the anireal style (cartoon proportions + photographic realism). – Detailed work on lighting, grain, texture and expression to ground the stylization in cinematic language. – A remastering phase to polish consistency, tone and technical execution.
Challenges we ran into
– Capturing a Spanish costumbrista atmosphere without falling into clichés. – Maintaining coherence within an anireal aesthetic mixing exaggeration and realism. – Directing emotionally credible performances with AI-driven tools. – Remastering without compromising the original emotional intent. – Balancing artistic ambition with the rapid turnaround required by GEN:48.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
– Our most emotionally grounded AI short to date. – Pushing Contanimation’s anireal aesthetic further than ever. – Achieving a nuanced blend of stylized anatomy and photographic realism. – Creating coherent, believable performances entirely through AI tools. – Delivering a remastered edition that finally matches the creators’ vision.
What we learned
We learned how much generative tools can contribute when performance, tone and direction are treated as core pillars. We refined our approach to stylized realism, improved our control over dialogue-driven scenes and developed a more stable pipeline for blending cartoonish proportions with cinematic texture.
What's next for Ausencia
We plan to continue refining Contanimation’s anireal aesthetic and explore longer-form narratives where performance, dialogue and stylized realism can be expanded even further.## Inspiration
