Online harassment is a significant issue affecting women globally. Here are some statistics that shed light on its prevalence and impact:

General Prevalence: Approximately 38% of women globally have experienced online harassment, according to a 2021 survey by The Economist Intelligence Unit. However, this number can vary significantly by region and demographic.

Gender-Based Abuse: A 2020 study by Plan International revealed that 58% of young women worldwide have experienced online harassment or abuse, often taking the form of sexist, racist, or homophobic messages, as well as body-shaming.

Social Media: Women on social media platforms, especially younger women, are frequently targeted:

According to Pew Research, 41% of U.S. adults have experienced online harassment, but 66% of women aged 18-29 report having been harassed online, with a large portion identifying social media as the primary platform for abuse. Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter are common platforms where women face harassment. Over 39% of women report facing harassment specifically on Facebook. Types of Harassment: The forms of harassment women experience online vary:

Cyberstalking: Roughly 26% of women have experienced cyberstalking, where perpetrators repeatedly monitor, contact, or track their online presence. Image-Based Abuse: Nearly 1 in 10 women in Europe has reported experiencing non-consensual sharing of intimate images. Psychological Impact: Online harassment has significant mental health effects on women. A study by Amnesty International found that 55% of women who experienced abuse or harassment online suffered from stress, anxiety, or panic attacks as a result.

Increased Vulnerability for Women of Color and LGBTQ+ Women: Marginalized groups face even higher rates of online abuse. Black women, Asian women, and women who identify as LGBTQ+ report experiencing both higher rates and more severe forms of online harassment, with an estimated 84% of LGBTQ+ women facing abuse online.

Response and Reporting: Many cases of online harassment go unreported due to lack of action by social media platforms. Amnesty International reports that 76% of women feel social media platforms do not do enough to protect them from abuse and harassment.
