Inspiration
Skincare isn't just a routine; it's an emotional investment. But most people only question their skin during high-anxiety moments: right after waking up to a sudden breakout from a new active ingredient, right before dropping $80 on a trending serum in a shopping cart, or when standing in front of a mirror wondering if an expensive product is actually working. We realized that existing beauty apps treat skin analysis like a static report card rather than an interactive decision-making tool. We wanted to build something that meets users precisely at those critical moments of decision.
What it does
AuraBeauty is an AI-powered skin intelligence and vanity management web platform that turns raw biometric data into actionable daily care. It features distinct, specialized modules powered by Perfect Corp's YouCam APIs: RegimenRx (Panic Scan): Evaluates sudden skin flare-ups against historical baseline scores, diagnosing whether a reaction is normal chemical purging or a compromised skin barrier, complete with a 3-day recovery routine.CartAudit: Audits pre-purchase ingredient lists against the user's personal biometric skin score to calculate compatibility percentages and flag conflicting components.MirrorCheck: Enforces standardized photo captures to track longitudinal progress with interactive comparison sliders and a "Keep or Quit" efficacy algorithm.ShelfAudit: Analyzes product photos and INCI ingredient lists to provide a clear safety light (Green, Yellow, or Red) based on the user's specific skin profile.
How we built it
We designed and developed AuraBeauty as a high-performance web application utilizing a modern stack:Frontend & UI/UX: Built with React, Tailwind CSS, and Lucide icons, featuring a high-end clinical-beauty aesthetic (clean minimalism, soft sage/rose accents, and glassmorphism). AI & Biometrics Integration: Integrated Perfect Corp’s YouCam Skin Analysis & VTO APIs, securely handling encrypted authentication keys and building robust simulation fallbacks for seamless testing.Deployment: Hosted live on Vercel with responsive, mobile-first workflows.
Challenges we ran into
Facial Landmark & Overlay Alignment: Getting the visual components and simulation layers to align precisely with facial coordinates (especially during dynamic split-slider comparisons) required fine-tuning our CSS and canvas rendering logic.
Translating Raw Biometrics into Human Advice: YouCam returns detailed technical metrics (like scores for spots, texture, and redness), but translating that raw data into empathetic, plain-English emergency advice ("Is this retinol purging or an allergic reaction?") took careful prompt and logic engineering.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successfully bridging the gap between cold API metrics and high-anxiety consumer moments (like a pre-purchase cart check or post-breakout panic).
Achieving a polished, luxury clinical-beauty UI that feels like an enterprise-grade product rather than a hackathon prototype.
Seamlessly integrating multiple distinct Perfect Corp YouCam features into one cohesive, tabbed user journey.
What we learned
We learned a tremendous amount about cosmetic science, active ingredient conflicts (like comedogenicity and skin barrier health), and how critical UX friction reduction is in health and beauty tech. Designing for high-stress emotional moments taught us that users don't just want data—they want a clear, reassuring verdict and an immediate next step.
What's next for AuraBeauty
Deeper Retail Integration: Expanding CartAudit to pull live ingredient lists directly from major e-commerce platforms (like Sephora and Nykaa) via a browser extension.
Expanded Dermatological RAG: Fine-tuning our local assistant to provide even more personalized, dermatologist-backed guidance for sensitive skin conditions.
Community Vanity Sharing: Allowing users to anonymously share verified "Keep or Quit" product journeys to help others avoid wasted purchases.
