🏎️ Inspiration

In Formula 1, a race isn't won solely by the driver—it's won by the strategy team on the pit wall who analyze thousands of data points to make split-second decisions. We realized that Software Engineering teams (SRE/DevOps) face the same pressure. They need to manage "pit stops" (deployments/hotfixes) with zero margin for error. We built PitStop AI to bring Williams Racing-level precision to Jira Service Management.

🤖 What it does

PitStop AI acts as your team's "Race Engineer." It lives inside Jira and uses historical sprint data to predict "tire wear" (team burnout) and "track conditions" (deployment risks).

Key features include:

  • Real-time Velocity Prediction: It analyzes the current sprint's burn-down rate against historical averages.
  • Bottleneck Detection: It alerts the team before a ticket gets stuck.
  • The "Undercut" Strategy: It suggests splitting large tickets into smaller sub-tasks to maintain flow.

The core of our prediction engine uses a weighted moving average of the team's completion rate, defined as:

$$V_{pred} = \frac{\sum_{i=1}^{n} w_i \cdot C_i}{\sum_{i=1}^{n} w_i}$$

Where $C_i$ is the completed story points in Sprint $i$, and $w_i$ is the recency weight (giving more importance to recent sprints).

⚙️ How we built it

We built this as a Forge app to ensure security and native integration within the Atlassian ecosystem.

  • Frontend: We used the Forge UI Kit for a seamless "Williams Racing" themed dashboard inside Jira issues.
  • Backend: Node.js (hosted on Forge FaaS) processes the issue events.
  • AI/ML: We integrated OpenAI's API to analyze comment sentiment and "blocker" descriptions, categorizing them into Mechanical (technical debt) or Aero (process) issues.
  • Data Storage: We utilized Forge Storage API to keep track of team velocity metrics without external databases.

🧩 Challenges we ran into

The biggest challenge was mapping the "Race Strategy" metaphor to actual Agile metrics without it feeling gimmicky. We initially struggled with the Forge Runtime Limit (25s) when calculating the velocity over thousands of past tickets. To solve this, we implemented an Async Events API architecture, allowing us to process historical data in the background and update the "Pit Wall" dashboard asynchronously.

🏅 Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are incredibly proud of the "Safety Car Mode". If the AI detects that the sprint scope has expanded by >20% (scope creep), it automatically triggers a "Safety Car" status on the Jira board, visibly flagging that the team needs to slow down and regroup during the daily stand-up.

🧠 What we learned

  • Forge Platform: We mastered the Custom UI bridge to render complex charts.
  • Formula 1 Strategy: We learned that "smooth is fast." By optimizing for flow rather than raw speed (story points), teams actually deliver faster—just like managing tire degradation in a race.

🚀 What's next for PitStop AI

  • Integration with Confluence to auto-generate "Race Debrief" (Retrospective) pages.
  • Adding "Weather Reports" (External API integration) to predict if holidays or team leaves will impact the next sprint.
