AURA: Return to Utopia (SheHacks Submission)

💡 Inspiration

"AI Assistants do not prompt creativity, they don’t support you... they’re like mouthwash, made to rinse, discard, and repeat the issues."

I realized that the digital landscape we are heading towards is filled with "slop"—soulless, automated content. Yet, we live in a world where a lot of dreamers have not given up hope for a better future.

These dreamers don't need another productivity tool. They need a coach—something to run their ideas through, to help them keep track of their individuality, and to empower them to just create and curate.

AURA is that coach. It's an antidote to the dystopian "optimization" culture, built to be a companion for the dreamers.

💻 What it does

AURA is a fully immersive, 3D web operating system that lives in your browser.

  • The Aura Room: A 3D environment that moves with you, replacing flat dashboards with interactive walls.
  • Vision Board 2.0: You don't just search for images—you dream them. Describes a mood ("Neon rain in Tokyo"), and AURA uses Gemini AI to hallucinate unique, artistic SVG vector graphics on the fly to pin to your wall.
  • Personal Brand Hub: A tribute to the MySpace era, letting you customize your entire digital identity—fonts, music, colors, and bio—persisted locally.
  • Aura Agents: Instead of a faceless bot, you have Pearl (The Nurturer), Nova (The Guardian), and Luna (The Mystic). They are personalities, not search engines.
  • Paint Browser & Vibe Check: Draw directly on the web interface with a retro toolset and blast your own MP3s through the integrated spatial audio player.

⚙️ How I built it

I solo-developed AURA using a modern creative stack:

  • Frontend: React + Vite for speed, Three.js (React Three Fiber) for the 3D environment, and Framer Motion for that buttery-smooth "Frutiger Aero" feel.
  • Backend: A Python (Flask) server acting as the brain.
  • AI Integration: I used OpenRouter to access Google's Gemini Pro/Flash models.
  • Generative Art: I engineered a custom prompting pipeline that forces the LLM to output raw SVG code instead of text, essentially turning a Chatbot into a Vector Artist.

🚧 Challenges I ran into

  • Gemini Crashing Out: Getting the AI to generate visuals was a nightmare. The image generation models kept failing or getting rate-limited. I had to pivot and engineer a system where the text-based LLM "draws" by writing raw SVG code instead—turning a bug into a feature!
  • The 3D Learning Curve: I had to learn the entire 3D web stack (Three.js, React Three Fiber) on the fly. Mathematical animations, random motion physics, and spatial positioning were all new to me.
  • Graphic Design & Aesthetics: It wasn't just about code; it was about capturing a "vibe." Designing the Frutiger Aero / Y2K aesthetic required me to wear a graphic designer hat, creating glassmorphism effects and curating assets that felt cohesive.

🏅 Accomplishments that I'm proud of

  • Successfully moving away from "Chat UI" to "Spatial UI".
  • The "Personal Brand" customization system—it really feels like owning a piece of the internet again.
  • Integrating a cohesive aesthetic (Frutiger Aero) that feels nostalgic yet futuristic.

🚀 What's next for AURA

  • Multiplayer Rooms: Visiting your friends' Aura Rooms (like Club Penguin meets Windows XP).
  • Voice Mode: Talking to Pearl/Nova directly.
  • Mobile AR: Projecting your Aura Room onto your real bedroom walls.
