Aura
Inspiration
The Wellness Gap
Studies show that approximately 58% of women worldwide cannot correctly name all four phases of the menstrual cycle, highlighting a widespread gap in menstrual health education (Hogan, 2025). Despite the menstrual cycle being recognized by medical organizations as a vital sign of overall health, most women are never taught how hormonal shifts affect energy, metabolism, mood, and physical performance.
While there is growing online advice on what to eat or how to exercise during a period, this guidance is often generic. In reality, each phase of the menstrual cycle has different biological needs, which are further influenced by conditions such as PCOS, thyroid, and Endometriosis disorders.
Existing apps typically stop at telling users what day of their cycle they are on. They rarely explain what that phase means or what actions to take, leaving women without practical, personalized support.
A Step Toward Change
Manually researching what to eat, how to exercise, or when to rest based on changing hormones is time-consuming and unrealistic.
Aura simplifies this process by providing daily, personalized nutrition and exercise recommendations that adapt to each user’s cycle, symptoms, and health conditions. By leveraging AI and automation, Aura removes the guesswork from wellness and empowers women to make confident, informed decisions about their health.
What It Does
Features
Aura supports women’s health through practical, accessible tools:
- Daily personalized meal and nutrition suggestions
- Phase-specific workouts and recovery plans
- AI-generated wellness insights and explanations
- Lifestyle guidance for hormonal conditions such as PCOS, thyroid, and Endometriosis disorders
- Cycle phase awareness without overwhelming tracking
- A simple, user-friendly dashboard that translates science into action
Instead of just tracking periods, Aura answers:
“What should I do today to feel my best?”
Everyday Impact
Aura translates research into everyday behavior.
By aligning diet, exercise, and lifestyle choices with hormonal changes, users can:
- Reduce fatigue and cramps
- Improve energy and focus
- Manage cravings and mood swings
- Better understand their bodies
Our goal is to close the women’s health education gap and make evidence-based wellness guidance accessible to everyone.
Tech Stack - How We Built It
- Gemini Studio AI – front-end design and prototyping
- React – front-end user interface
- Node.js – back-end and API handling
- Supabase (PostgreSQL) – authentication and database storage
- GitHub + VS Code – collaboration and version control
- Vite / React Native tooling – fast development and testing
Challenges We Ran Into
- Structuring the project from an empty repository
- Managing limited free Gemini API tokens efficiently
- Handling inconsistencies in AI-generated outputs
- Configuring Supabase authentication and database schemas to securely store cycles, symptoms, and notes
- Designing a health-focused interface that remained simple and not overwhelming
Working with Supabase in particular required significant debugging and schema design to ensure reliable data retrieval and storage.
Accomplishments We’re Proud Of
The Product
We successfully built a fully functional app that addresses a real and overlooked gap in women’s health. Aura goes beyond tracking and provides actionable, daily guidance, which many existing apps fail to deliver.
Accessibility
We’re especially proud of creating a clean, user-friendly experience that makes complex hormonal science easy to understand.
Our Growth
As a team, we quickly learned new tools, integrated AI into a live application, and shipped a complete product within a short time frame.
What We Learned
Through building Aura, we learned:
- How to integrate a generative AI API into a real-world app
- How to design responsibly for health and wellness
- How to use Supabase and backend services effectively
- How to collaborate using GitHub in a fast-paced environment
On a personal level, we also gained a deeper understanding of menstrual and hormonal health. This project taught us both technical skills and health literacy, making the experience especially meaningful.
What’s Next for Aura
As Aura continues to grow, we plan to:
- Add smarter AI predictions based on symptom patterns
- Notify users when patterns suggest consulting a healthcare professional
- Expand educational content and expert-backed resources
- Allow users to export wellness summaries for their doctors
Our vision is for Aura to become a trusted daily wellness companion, helping women work with their biology — not against it.
