Team XRfinity
We the team XRfinity designed and developed a sample prototype to embrace our journey and make contributions to the field of Extended Reality.
Inspiration
The idea for Protoview AR stemmed from the need to bridge the gap between concept and creation. Often, designers and developers struggle to visualize their ideas in a realistic context before production. We wanted to create a solution that empowers users to interact with 3D product models in augmented reality, making the design and prototyping process more efficient, accurate, and engaging.
What it does
Protoview AR allows users to upload, view, and interact with 3D models of products in augmented reality. Before committing to development, users can preview their designs in real-world settings, enabling better decision-making, enhanced visualization, and a more streamlined prototyping workflow. It’s an essential tool for industries like product design, architecture, and manufacturing.
How we built it
We built Protoview AR using Unity as the primary development platform and integrated the Vuforia SDK to enable robust AR functionality. Vuforia's image target feature was leveraged to anchor 3D models in the real world, ensuring accurate placement and scaling. The 3D models were created and optimized using Blender to ensure seamless rendering. The application was designed with a user-friendly interface to allow effortless uploading, viewing, and interaction with models.
Challenges we ran into
- Optimizing 3D Models: Ensuring that high-quality models could be rendered smoothly on various devices without compromising performance.
- Accurate Tracking: Implementing image targets required precise calibration to achieve reliable tracking and alignment in AR.
- User Experience: Designing an interface that was both powerful and easy to use posed a significant challenge.
- Device Compatibility: Ensuring the application performed consistently across a range of devices with varying hardware capabilities.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully integrating Vuforia's image target feature for seamless AR interactions.
- Creating a smooth and immersive AR experience for users.
- Developing a user-friendly interface that simplifies complex processes.
- Receiving positive feedback during testing from designers and engineers who found the tool incredibly useful.
What we learned
- Technical Insights: Gained expertise in AR technologies, including Vuforia SDK, and learned how to optimize 3D assets for real-time rendering.
- User-Centered Design: Understood the importance of building applications that cater to the needs of end users.
- Problem-Solving: Overcame various technical challenges, improving our debugging and development skills.
What's next for Augmented reality product prototype
- Enhanced Features: Adding functionality for collaborative design, allowing multiple users to interact with the same AR model in real time.
- Cloud Integration: Enabling cloud storage for models, making them accessible anytime and anywhere.
- AI-Driven Enhancements: Integrating AI to provide suggestions for model improvements and feedback on designs.
- Support for More Formats: Expanding support for various 3D file formats to make the tool more versatile.
- Industry-Specific Tools: Developing tailored solutions for industries like automotive, furniture design, and consumer electronics.
