The inspiration behind this product was that we wanted to find an innovative way for people to buy big ticket items in their homes. Our objective is to create a better user experience for shopping and buying those items as well. We thought that the use of augmented reality in smartphones was one of the ways we could do this.

We based it off of this scenario.

Let’s say it's time for a new couch in your brand new home but you aren’t sure how it will look in your living room. You don't want to go to a home store. So, you open the shop app on your mobile device and search for your next couch. You see one that you like and using this feature can see what the couch would look like in your space. You tap on an icon that allows you to see the big ticket item in your living room. You can also see how different options may look in the same space. From there you are able to shop and/or purchase that brand new big ticket item.

This feature is not yet built due to the time constraint we had, however, we do have a video that will walk through the idea itself. It was built using Principle and Sketch to draw out the different screens and have them interact with each other. We made a mock up of the user interface of the Shop App, took different images from the internet to create this scenario, and hopefully presented it in a way that effectively showcases our idea.

Time and overall augmented reality knowledge were a couple of the challenges we faced. We essentially had a month to build an idea of the feature and we wanted to do extensive research as to what would make this unique to Shop app.

Overall, being apart of this contest is an accomplishment in itself. We liked working with each other and collaborating on this project together. Although we do not have any code of the sort built we are confident that the idea will change the way people shop.

We learned a few valuable lessons.

  1. Time can be your enemy and your best friend
  2. Interacting with the platform itself is an integral part about finding a solution that can improve on it.
  3. Research is necessary. Whether that may be technical research or research as to how a feature could work. It ranged for our project.

So, what's next? Ideally, we would love to see this project be implemented. We believe that it is a great start to something that can revolutionize Shop app's mobile platform as a whole. We came up with a lot of technical questions regarding Augmented Reality that we do not currently have answers to. We also see this feature being used beyond furniture. It can be used in flooring, seating, the kitchen, etc. There are so many different avenues that this idea can go.
