Inspiration
We were inspired by the growing problem of digital distraction among students and mobile users. Constant app switching, scrolling, and impulsive phone use make it harder to stay focused, especially during study sessions.
We also noticed that existing app blockers are not fully effective because they can be easily disabled or ignored. This pushed us to think beyond blocking apps and instead focus on understanding why and when distraction happens.
That’s how Attentra was born — an AI-powered focus assistant that helps users build better attention habits instead of just restricting phone usage.
What it does
Attentra detects real-time behavioral patterns such as tap bursts, scrolling intensity, and app-switch frequency to predict when a user is about to lose focus.
When distraction is detected, it triggers small “micro-missions” designed to gently guide the user back into focus instead of interrupting harshly.
Over time, the system builds a personalized Focus DNA, learning each user’s distraction habits and triggers to improve predictions and interventions.
How we built it
Attentra is built using React Native (frontend/mobile app) and Node.js (backend API).
The backend processes user interaction signals and runs a simple AI-based behavioral pattern recognition system to detect distraction trends.
We structured the system to:
Collect interaction signals (taps, scrolls, app switching frequency) Analyze behavior patterns in real time Generate distraction predictions Trigger adaptive interventions (micro-missions) Update user Focus DNA over time
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge was realizing that simple app-blocking solutions were not enough, since users can easily disable them. This led us to redesign our approach completely toward behavioral prediction instead of restriction.
Another challenge was designing an AI system that could detect distraction without being intrusive or judgmental. We had to balance usefulness with privacy and user comfort.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we successfully shifted from a simple app-blocking idea to a more advanced behavioral AI approach that predicts distraction before it fully happens.
We also managed to design a system that focuses on supporting users instead of controlling them, which is a more ethical and user-friendly approach.
Another key achievement is building the concept of the Focus DNA, a personalized model that evolves with each user’s habits over time, making the system adaptive rather than static.
Finally, we are proud that we were able to combine technical implementation with real-world user psychology, turning an everyday problem into a structured AI-driven solution.
What we learned
We learned that building a meaningful product requires persistence and iteration. Our first ideas were simple, but through research and setbacks, we discovered a deeper problem: attention behavior itself.
We also learned how important ethical design is when working with user behavior data, especially around privacy and consent.
What's next for Attentra
Next, we plan to improve the accuracy of the distraction prediction model by training it on more diverse user behavior patterns.
We also want to expand Attentra into a more complete productivity ecosystem, including deeper focus analytics, long-term habit reports, and smarter micro-mission generation.
Another important next step is adding stronger privacy-first architecture, such as on-device processing, to ensure sensitive behavioral data never leaves the user’s device.
In the future, we also aim to integrate Attentra into student learning environments to help improve focus during studying and online learning sessions.
