Inspiration

I am currently in my 2nd year (3rd semester), and in our college, we have a strict 75% attendance rule. My friends and I are constantly using calculators trying to figure out: "Can I miss tomorrow's lecture?" At the same time, we have lab practicals, assignments, and exams. I wanted to build a simple web tool that solves this exact everyday problem for college students.

What it does

AttendSmart has two main parts:

  1. Attendance Calculator: You enter your subject name, how many classes you attended, and the total held. It instantly tells you if you are in the safe zone or shortage, and calculates the exact number of classes you can safely skip or need to attend consecutively to reach 75%.
  2. Priority Study Queue: You add upcoming assignments or exams along with their deadlines and importance (1 to 5). It calculates an urgency score and sorts the most important and urgent tasks to the top so you know what to study first.

How I built it

  • HTML & CSS: Built the layout from scratch with a dark mode look using CSS Flexbox and Grid.
  • JavaScript: Wrote the calculation logic for the attendance margin formulas, task sorting, and saving data in localStorage.
  • Git & GitHub: Initialized the project locally, created incremental commits for each feature, and hosted it live on GitHub Pages.

Challenges I ran into

The hardest part was figuring out the math for the attendance shortage formula. When you attend future classes, both the attended count and the total count increase at the same time, so getting the exact number of consecutive classes needed took some trial and error. Also, learning how to use Git commands in the terminal and push code to GitHub for the first time was challenging, but I worked through it.

What I learned

This hackathon gave me my first real experience with Git version control, deploying a live project on GitHub Pages, and turning an everyday student problem into working code.
