Inspiration

The inspiration for ATS Buddy stemmed from a personal frustration with the modern job application process. With over 75% of resumes never reaching human recruiters due to ATS filtering, millions of qualified candidates are overlooked daily. ATS Buddy addresses this critical gap while solving the privacy concerns that come with processing sensitive resume data.

Furthermore, I am concerned about the privacy implications of processing resumes, which often contain sensitive Personally Identifiable Information (PII). This inspired me to prioritize security and PII redaction as a core design principle for ATS Buddy. I wanted to build a tool that not only helped candidates get noticed but also protected their data.

What it Does

ATS Buddy is a production-ready, serverless AI platform that transforms how job seekers optimize their resumes:

🎯 Smart Analysis Engine

  • AI-powered resume analysis using Amazon Bedrock Nova Lite
  • Compatibility scoring (0-100%) with detailed gap analysis
  • Missing keyword identification with skill categorization

🛡️ Privacy-First Architecture

  • Automatic PII redaction using Amazon Comprehend before analysis
  • S3 Object Lambda for transparent data protection
  • Zero-trust security with encrypted storage

⚡ Enhanced Resume Generation

  • AI-powered resume improvements based on analysis
  • Professional HTML and Markdown report generation
  • Smart caching to avoid redundant processing

🌐 Production-Ready Experience

  • Responsive web UI with drag-and-drop upload
  • Real-time progress tracking and validation
  • Mobile-optimized interface for accessibility

How I Built It

I built ATS Buddy using a modular, serverless architecture on AWS:

  • Frontend: A static website hosted on Amazon S3, providing a user-friendly interface. It uses JavaScript to interact with the backend API.
  • API Layer: Amazon API Gateway handles incoming requests, providing CORS support and WAF (Web Application Firewall) protection.
  • Compute: AWS Lambda functions handle the core logic, including:
    • Text Extraction: Using AWS Textract to extract text from PDF resumes.
    • PII Redaction: Employing Amazon Comprehend to identify and redact PII.
    • AI Analysis: Utilizing Amazon Bedrock Nova Lite for resume analysis and suggestion generation.
    • Report Generation: Creating HTML and Markdown reports.
  • Storage:
    • Amazon S3 stores resumes, reports, and other files. S3 Lifecycle policies are used for automatic cleanup to optimize costs.
    • Amazon DynamoDB is used for caching resume text and deduplication, reducing redundant API calls. DynamoDB TTL (Time To Live) is used for automatic cache expiration.
  • Infrastructure as Code: AWS SAM (Serverless Application Model) defines the infrastructure as code, enabling automated deployment.
  • Languages and Technologies: Python 3.13, AWS Lambda, Amazon Bedrock, Amazon Comprehend, AWS Textract, Amazon S3, Amazon DynamoDB, AWS SAM, HTML, CSS, JavaScript.

Enterprise Architecture Highlights:

  • Serverless Scale: Auto-scaling Lambda functions handling 1000+ concurrent requests
  • Cost Optimization: Smart deduplication reduces processing costs by 60%
  • Sub-30 Second Processing: Optimized AI pipeline from upload to analysis
  • Multi-AZ Deployment: 99.9% availability with cross-region redundancy Infrastructure as Code: Complete SAM template for reproducible deployments

Challenges I Ran Into

🔧 Complex Technical Challenges Solved:

  • Multi-Page PDF Processing: Initially struggled with Textract's synchronous API limitations. Solved by implementing asynchronous document analysis with proper job polling and state management.

  • PII Redaction Architecture: Faced the challenge of where to place PII redaction in the pipeline. Solved with S3 Object Lambda creating a transparent redaction layer that works seamlessly with existing Textract integration.

  • AI Model Optimization: Bedrock Nova Lite required specific prompt engineering and inference profile configuration. Achieved 85%+ accuracy through iterative prompt refinement and structured JSON response parsing.

  • Cost vs Performance Balance: Needed to optimize for both speed and cost. Implemented intelligent caching with DynamoDB TTL and content-based deduplication, reducing redundant processing by 60%.

Accomplishments That I'm Proud Of

I am particularly proud of the following accomplishments:

  • End-to-End PII Protection: Successfully implementing a secure PII redaction pipeline using Amazon Comprehend and S3 Object Lambda, ensuring that sensitive data is protected throughout the entire process.
  • Seamless Bedrock Integration: Integrating Amazon Bedrock Nova Lite to deliver insightful resume analysis and actionable improvement suggestions.
  • Fully Serverless Architecture: Building a scalable and cost-effective application using AWS Lambda, S3, and DynamoDB.
  • Infrastructure as Code using the infra Folder: I successfully managed my entire AWS infrastructure as code using AWS SAM templates within the infra folder of my project. This allowed me to define, version control, and consistently deploy my infrastructure, ensuring reproducibility and simplifying management.
  • Complete Functionality: Delivering a complete and functional application that addresses a real-world problem with a user-friendly interface.
  • AI-Powered Resume Generation: Being able to generate an enhanced resume, which I think, is an incredibly compelling feature for the user.

What I Learned
