Inspiration
Over 50% of the world's population lacks access to essential healthcare. Many people in rural or low-income areas cannot consult a doctor when experiencing symptoms. This reality inspired us to build a virtual assistant that could offer instant, intelligent triage to help users decide when and where to seek care – no doctor required. Our goal was to create a simple but powerful tool that empowers people to act early and confidently about their health.
What it does
Atriage allows users to describe their symptoms in natural language through a chat interface. The AI analyzes these inputs, asks follow-up questions, and guides the user to the appropriate level of care: home treatment, primary care visit, or emergency services. The assistant provides clear, practical recommendations without attempting diagnosis.
How we built it
We used the Bolt.new platform to build the no-code interface and connected it to an NLP model that understands symptom descriptions. A basic triage engine was developed based on public health triage protocols. The application is lightweight and mobile-friendly, built for users with limited access to medical resources or bandwidth.
Challenges we ran into
Simplifying medical triage logic into an accessible, understandable flow was a key challenge. Balancing safety, clarity, and user trust without stepping into diagnosis required careful design. Adapting NLP to process varied and unstructured symptom descriptions also required tuning and iteration.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully created a triage assistant that works entirely through natural language, without requiring technical knowledge or medical literacy. The assistant provides guidance that is accurate, fast, and human-centred – and it can be used even in remote areas with no access to clinics.
What we learned
We learned how to bridge AI tools with public health goals and how much value simplicity brings when building for real-world users. We also saw the importance of responsible AI design in health contexts – where every decision must prioritize safety, clarity, and ethical care.
What's next for Atriage – AI Medical Triage Assistant
We plan to expand support for more languages, add voice-based input for users with limited literacy, and partner with NGOs for field deployment in under-resourced communities. Our long-term vision includes using wearable data and remote monitoring to offer more personalized triage and preventive care.
