Atomic Changes

An initiative which believes that small changes one at a time would always be the recipe for an awwweesome Hackathon.

This project is the part of the Hack Devpost hackathon.

Inspiration

I had started my hackathon journey with a uni-level college hackathon organized by our college GDSC group. As a first timer it had been a quite an exciting and bumpy ride. Though bumps are always there and it is one of the main thing that adds to the excitements of hackathons some improvements if brought about could surely help reduce anxiety for first time hackers at the end. Hack Devpost came at the perfect time where I would have gained the experience of a successful offline and an online hackathon where I messed up with the submission schedule big time. Changing times like introduction of new AI solutions also made me think about how this can change the Hackathon landscape for better and more cool solutions.

Features (Observations from previous hackathons)

  • Offline (Devsprint,22)

    • There was a general incoherence among all first time hackers about what they wanted to build, Even though there was always general idea about the broader objective based on the stream chosen absence of a proper plan upon which proper action can be taken and progress can be properly monitored by the team leader lead to a great deal of anxiety by the end.
    • There was a dearth of proper expertise in the event . Presence of industry experts and experienced hackers would have been wonderful.
    • Proper brainstorming sessions and zeroing down to the exact objective with the helps of previous projects would help hackers in envisioning a step by step path.
    • Time zone difference, when a hacker register's for a hackathon an average location can be taken from the hacker upon which all the important timing especially the submission of the deadline can be give in the local time not with respect to some other time zone which often results in confusion.
    • Proper information about constraint's like whether third part resources like third party AI models and AI services can be used to generate code of the the hackathon like whether use of AI generated images, read.me files or code blocks can be allowed or not.
  • Online (WeMakeDevs x Stream)

    • It was often seen that when people participate in online hackathons they out of shyness do not participate in teams, better team building exercises can proof to be very helpful. While working alone they are often unable to get the work done and abandon the project midway. We cannot let ideas get lost that way
    • An in depth Project development monitoring was absent , presence of it would help any hacker achieve their targets better and make sure they are able to submit the project on time .
  • Some very Unique Ideas

    • Introducing the participant to UN SDG's (Sustainable Development Goals) and encourage them to create solution's to the problem they are working on keeping them in mind, tagging individual projects with the corresponding SDG's they are compliant with. This will encourage a habit of creating SGD compliant solutions among the hackers.
    • Times are changing, advanced Artificial Intelligence solutions of the likes of ChatGPT are coming out. With the advent of Artificial Intelligence exploring creative solutions like frontend design's and content/pitch writing hackathons should also update themselves with changing times. Perhaps giving the hackers a chance to submit AI solution services to the organizer which can be approved by them if them deem it alright would serve as a viable solution. Such changes will also bring down illegal use of such services if they are not allowed and have been specifically declared by the organizer.
    • A sharable to-do list for the whole group would be a nice idea. They maybe be given a 2 hour or an hour of brainstorming season wherethey will design their very own roadmap to help them implement a structures solution easily.

How I built it

I tried to convey my ideas with the help of Canva.

Challenges I ran into

The challenges which we ran into included considering whether the issues that we were observing were really issues at all. Making our solution to issues as realistic as possible also required quite an effort.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I learned a lot about the new developments in United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and many cool Generative Artificial Intelligence Services while researching and learning for the topic.

What we learned

I learned Markdown and this helped me improve my writing and problem solving skills.

What's next for Atomic Changes

Atomic Changes is all about small changes can compile into big results over time , I hope to at least 100 more hackathons in the feature (hackathons always has this energy which brings out innovation from inside you) and bring about more such improvements in this wonderful event!
