Inspiration
Most finance apps are great at telling you where your money went, but not what you can actually afford to do next. We wanted ATMOS Balance to feel more like a financial forecast: simple, visual, and focused on helping users understand how today's decisions affect tomorrow. Most finance apps are great at telling you where your money went, but not what you can actually afford to do next. We work by motivating you to see your goals, not by scaring you into budgeting.
What it does
ATMOS connects your accounts and gives you a clearer picture of your real spending power. Instead of just showing your balance, it considers upcoming expenses, protected funds, recurring payments, and savings goals to estimate what is actually safe to spend.
How we built it
We built ATMOS Balance in Swift and SwiftUI, with a visual style inspired by Apple's Weather app, as we are the financial forecaster of your goals and saving/spending habits.
For the Capital One Nessie Challenge, we used the Nessie API to work with simulated customers, accounts, balances, and transactions. On top of that, we built our own logic for protected funds, safe-to-spend calculations, goals, and future projections.
We also use Gemini to turn those calculations into simple, useful explanations instead of just showing users more numbers.
Challenges we ran into
The hardest part was making all the financial logic work together. A single purchase can affect your balance, upcoming bills, protected money, and several goals at the same time. We also had to combine different parts of the project built by different team members while keeping both the logic and design consistent. THis actually took most of the effort, as all the different infrastructures have to coexist, and we were not good at this.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that ATMOS became more than an expense tracker. It can look at a user's current finances, upcoming obligations, and goals, then help explain what they can safely do next. We also managed to bring features like safe-to-spend, protected funds, goals, projections, and What If scenarios into one consistent experience.
What we learned
The biggest thing we learned is that your bank balance does not tell the whole story. Knowing you have money in your account is very different from knowing how much of it you can actually spend. We also learned a lot about API integration, financial modeling, SwiftUI, and building quickly as a team under a tight deadline. This was a good experiment in coding and start-up work, as we are happy to have created essentially a start-up product!
What's next for ATMOS Balance
Next, we'd like to connect ATMOS to real financial institutions, improve the forecasting model, and make its guidance even more personalized.
The long-term goal is simple: ATMOS should help users answer a better question than "How much money do I have?". Instead, we answer: "What can I safely do with it?"
