Inspiration
Apple is highly rich in antioxidants and fibers, and has a nice carbohydrate count too, to keep you energy up and going. Who could need more energy than Mario, he runs all the dayum time! That was our little fun inspiration and we wanted to make something that would induce a sense of importance of healthy foods in our life, in a subtle and gamified way, and that's how we came up with our tweaked version of Super Mario, called Athletic Mario. Oh and also, it also utilizes the powers of machine learning
What it does
Athletic Mario is much of like an online arcade game, with a different kinda theme. Your player would have an initial value of energy, which would decrease as they keep on running. But heres the twist, you can refuel the energy, or rather gain some by collecting apples that appear on the platform. Apples would give your character more energy to run further.
The player would keep on running in the forward direction. To make it jump, you can either clap [like make a clap sound with your hands, which is detected by our machine
The game gets over when either the character falls/collide with the platform horizontally or when their energy level reaches 0 (zero). The score is calculated based on the total time you could survive. After the game is over, you can view the score on the score tab.
Also, we wanted the look of our website to be a mixture of classic and lavish, so yea we're kinda proud of that.
How we built it
- For making the logic part of our game, we used JavaScript with sketch.js library to show it up on the UI.
- For hosting it on the web, we used Linode Cloud.
- For designing the web pages, we used Figma.
- For machine learning, we used google's teachable machine
Challenges we ran into
Completing the game within time was pretty challenging, but we did it successfully. Also, getting the Mario logic to work properly, that too with the machine learning model simultaneously was indeed intriguing in the first go, but we managed it pretty well eventually!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Completing the project in time, passing a nice message and our really simplistic but cute looking UI <3
What we learned
We learnt how to use Sketch.js and how to host websites on linode.
What's next for Athletic Mario
We would like to add more levels and more options to choose from while playing the game!
