Inspiration

The inspiration behind this is to bridge the gap for women and under represented communities in the financial world (specifically stock market). Our team had very little idea and confidence about our financial knowledge. We were inspired to build an easy-to-use stock market simulator game to help people give an early head start on stock market. We also attach educational resources for viewers to learn more about finance basics!

What it does

The website is simple with 3 components - about the website, finance basics, and a try me page! The "About" page gives an overview of DR. Stop, the finance buddy, that is going to help you in the quick journey of finance. The finance basics has educational resources for viewers to read. Finally the try me page is our Stock Market Game / Simulator. Firstly, you get 5000 dollars to spend on investing ! It asks you for your investing goals (whether you want to invest for 1 year, 10 years, or 30 years). Then it takes you to a page which has dummy data about stocks and their prices and industries. They can choose which stocks to buy, how many to buy, and for how long they want to buy the stocks. They can also choose to sell stocks. After deciding what to buy and for how long, it takes you to a portfolio page which graphs your stock prices over the time period you choose. At this point, you have an option to buy or sell more stocks. The game ends when the time you initially chose for investing ends or when you manually click on "end game" button. On end, the game shows if you lost or won money at investing !

How we built it

We used Figma, JavaScript, CSS, Python, Flask, and HTML. We did everything from scratch (including data generation, logos etc. ) !

Challenges we ran into

Firstly, we made this project to help people like us understand finance better. We did not know much about stock market etc. and picking a project in this field was challenging. Secondly, we also did not know anything about Flask and learnt it during the hackathon. Lastly, our biggest challenge - we initially started building our project on React and Flask. 4 hrs into the project we realised (thanks to our mentors !) that actually react and flask don't work that well together. We had to pivot our tech stack midway into the project and rewrite code !

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We created something special and impactful in under 24 hours while having so much fun and learning so much more !

What we learned

  1. Finance fundamentals learnt (we learnt about finance basics while researching for our website)
  2. Flask
  3. How to plan, design, manage, build a website within 24 hours.

What's next for AthenaHacks Project

The website still has a lot of features which we planned but did not have the time to implement. We will continue working on it and try to make it better!
