Inspiration

The inspiration for Athena came from Medium's language accessibility challenge. According to Medium's documentation, while the platform hosts millions of articles, the majority of content is written in English. This creates a significant barrier for both readers and writers:

  • Non-English readers miss out on valuable knowledge and insights
  • Writers who are more comfortable in other languages struggle to reach Medium's global audience
  • Content creators from non-English speaking regions have limited access to Medium's Partner Program

What it does

Athena is a Chrome extension that breaks down language barriers on Medium.com by providing:

  1. For Readers:

    • Real-time translation of English articles into their preferred language
    • Seamless integration with Medium's interface
    • Privacy-focused translation using Chrome's on-device AI Translation API
  2. For Writers:

    • Ability to write content in their native language
    • One-click translation to English before publishing
    • Opportunity to participate in Medium's Partner Program

How we built it

We leveraged several cutting-edge technologies to build Athena:

  • Chrome's experimental Translator API for on-device translation(1)
  • Chrome Extensions platform for seamless integration
  • Side Panel API for an intuitive user interface
  • Service Workers for background processing

The extension uses Chrome's built-in AI capabilities to perform translations locally on the user's device, ensuring:

  • Fast performance without server delays
  • Enhanced privacy as content never leaves the user's device
  • Reliable translation even with unstable internet connections

Challenges we ran into

  1. Technical Limitations:

    • Working with experimental APIs that are still in development
    • Ensuring smooth performance with large articles
  2. User Experience:

    • Creating an intuitive interface for both reading and writing modes
    • Maintaining the original formatting after translation

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  1. Successfully implemented on-device translation using Chrome's latest AI capabilities
  2. Created a seamless user experience that feels native to Medium
  3. Built a solution that helps bridge the global language divide
  4. Maintained user privacy by keeping all translations local
  5. Developed a tool that empowers writers from non-English speaking backgrounds

What we learned

  1. Deep understanding of Chrome's new AI Translation APIs
  2. Best practices for building privacy-focused extensions
  3. Importance of user experience in language tools
  4. Challenges of working with experimental technologies
  5. The significant impact language barriers have on content accessibility

What's next for Athena

  1. Feature Expansion:

    • Support for more language pairs as they become available
    • Enhanced writing assistance features.
  2. Technical Improvements:

    • Integration with Chrome's Summarizer API
    • Performance optimizations for larger articles
  3. Community Growth:

    • Partnership with Medium for deeper integration
    • Community-driven improvements and translations
    • Support for additional content platforms beyond Medium
