Inspiration
Republicans and Democrats are more divided along ideological lines – and partisan antipathy is deeper and more extensive – than at any point in the last two decades. These trends manifest themselves in myriad ways, both in politics and in everyday life.
What it does
- Athena aims to bridge the gap between people who have differing political views through conversation about relevant and topics that are mutually interesting for both parties.
- Athena assigns each user a score based on their political leaning to calculate compatible user matchs
How we built it
- React Native for iOS app
- FacebookSDK for login & OAuth
- Firebase and Rails for Backend API
Challenges we ran into
- All 5 of us learned Firebase and React Native in the past 24 hours
- Finding ways to humanize the users
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Design: aimed to be as user-friendly as possible
- Relevant to own interest: Pairs you to speak with someone that has a different political view on topics of mutual interest
- Real Time Chatting
What we learned
- React Native
- Web Sockets
What's next for Athena
- We want to test new users to iterate upon our application. We believe this application has the potential to make an impact in the community. Bridging the gap between political views is an extremely hard problem, and we hope to make progress in this area.
- Make the app available on Android and on Web
