Inspiration Athena's Compass was born from the challenge researchers and students face when diving into complex topics. We noticed that the initial phase of research—breaking down broad subjects into manageable subtopics—often becomes overwhelming. Named after the Greek goddess of wisdom, our tool aims to be the intelligent compass that guides users through their research journey. What it does Athena's Compass is an AI-powered research assistant that helps users: Deconstruct complex research queries into focused subtopics Visualize connections between different research areas through interactive knowledge graphs Engage in Socratic dialogue to deepen understanding (coming soon) Generate structured research paths with relevant keywords and focus areas How we built it We created Athena's Compass using a modern tech stack focused on performance and user experience: Frontend: React with TypeScript for type-safe component development Vite as the build tool for lightning-fast development Tailwind CSS for responsive and beautiful UI design shadcn/ui for consistent and accessible component design Key Features: Query Deconstruction Engine: Intelligently breaks down research topics Interactive Knowledge Graph: Visualizes relationships between topics

  1. Adaptive UI: Responsive design that works across all devices Real-time Processing: Immediate feedback and topic generation Challenges we ran into Implementing an intuitive UI that handles complex topic relationships Optimizing the knowledge graph visualization for performance Ensuring accurate topic decomposition while maintaining relevance Balancing between detailed analysis and user-friendly presentation Accomplishments that we're proud of Created a beautiful, modern UI with smooth animations and transitions Implemented an efficient topic decomposition system Built a scalable architecture that can handle future features Achieved a responsive design that works seamlessly across devices What we learned Advanced React patterns and TypeScript integration Modern CSS techniques with Tailwind Component library development and maintenance User experience design for complex data visualization What's next for Athena's Compass Implementing the Socratic dialogue feature Expanding the knowledge graph capabilities Adding collaborative research features Integrating with academic databases and resources
