Inspiration

As a high school student deeply interested in space science and Olympiad preparation, I always felt the lack of interactive, student-friendly astronomy simulators. Existing tools were either too complex, desktop-heavy, or lacked AI assistance for doubt-solving. That’s when I decided to build astroSim — an AI-powered 3D simulation app designed for students like me, preparing for STEM Olympiads and curious about the cosmos.

What it does

astroSim is a 3D real-time astronomy simulation app designed for mobile devices. Features include:

-Simulating Kepler’s Laws, Retrograde Motion, Celestial Sphere, Parallax

-Customizing planetary systems

-AI assistant Astra for guiding, explaining astronomy terms and concepts

-Designed for Olympiad prep and school STEM learners

-Runs offline on mid-range Android smartphones

How we built it

-Languages: Java (OpenGL ES)

-AI Module: Astra chatbot logic + GPT-inspired dialogues

-Graphic Assets: Canva, DALL·E, InShot

-Documentation: Solo authored research paper, hackathon PPT, and teaser video

-Tested: 60 fps high-end phone, 30 fps mid-range phone

Challenges we ran into

-Designing optimized 3D simulations for mobile limitations

-Managing AI replies for astronomy-specific queries

-Building polished assets (teaser, research paper, pitch deck) solo within the tight hackathon deadline

-Competing against experienced, college-level coders as a solo high schooler

Accomplishments that we're proud of

-Completed a fully working simulation prototype

-Recorded a teaser demo video with cosmic audio

-Authored a research paper and submitted to an academic journal

-Created a complete hackathon submission package entirely solo

-Learned professional asset and time management in a real competitive event

What we learned

-3D graphics optimization and mobile OpenGL performance tuning

-Designing educational AI conversational experiences

-Structuring academic-style research papers and professional pitch decks

-Multi-tasking content, video, documentation, and development solo under pressure

What's next for astroSim

-Add new modules: Exoplanets, Gravity Slingshot, Eclipses

-Integrate GPT-4 Astra AI for live answers and dynamic guidance

-VR module for classroom demonstrations

-Full Android APK release for Olympiad coaching centers and schools

-Submit improved versions to JEI and other student research journals

-Aim for NASA Space Apps Challenge and national-level innovation contests like INSPIRE Awards
