Inspiration

I’ve always been fascinated by space — the stars, planets, and the mysteries beyond. But exploring space data isn’t always easy or accessible. That’s why I built AstroMate AI — to bring real-time space exploration to everyone’s fingertips using open data from NASA and other space APIs.

What it does

AstroMate AI is a mobile-friendly web app that helps users explore space interactively:

  • 🌌 View NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD)
  • 🚀 Get real-time location of the ISS
  • 🪐 Browse Mars rover images
  • 💬 Chat with an AI about space facts

It makes space data engaging and easy to explore — from your tablet or any browser.

How we built it

I used HTML, CSS, and JavaScript with simple fetch requests to public NASA APIs. The interface is responsive and works on both mobile and desktop. I hosted it with GitHub Pages so anyone can try it instantly.

Challenges we ran into

I had only a tablet and limited time, so I optimized for lightweight design and efficient APIs. Integrating dynamic content and making it touch-friendly was tricky but rewarding.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am proud to have built the entire project using just a tablet, proving that creativity and determination can overcome hardware limitations. Despite the time crunch, we successfully integrated real-time space data using multiple NASA public APIs and delivered a smooth, mobile-friendly interface. Completing and deploying a fully functional space exploration tool within 24 hours was both challenging and rewarding.

What we learned

I learned how powerful public APIs are — especially NASA's — and how important it is to make tech accessible to everyone, no matter their device. I also improved my front-end web development and API handling skills.

What's next for AstroMate AI – Your Gateway to the Cosmos

In the future, I have a plan to add an AI-powered chatbot that can answer space-related questions, integrate voice command support for a more interactive experience, and include a live space news feed from NASA and other agencies. We also aim to enhance the visual design with features like dark mode and real-time animations, and eventually turn AstroMate AI into a standalone Android app for easier access on mobile devices.
