Inspiration

The inspiration for this project was to create a learning experience that is masked as a competitive and fun trivia game, in order to inspire the next generation of NASA.

What it does

Our game first starts players off with a chance to input their names, and then gets started with a game to fuel your rocket ship. In order to win the game you must fully refuel the rocket to reach the moon! However, if you get the answer wrong your game ends there.

How we built it

We started by creating a basic HTML layout for our game using tags like div, h1, p. We used placeholder text for our questions and answers, and made sure to give each element a unique ID. Then we used CSS to style our HTML layout and give our game a visually appealing design. We customized fonts, colors, backgrounds, and more, using CSS rules like font-family, color, and background-color. We used JavaScript to create the game logic. We started by creating an array of objects that contained our questions and answers. We used the DOM (Document Object Model) to manipulate the HTML elements and display the questions and answer choices on the screen.

Challenges we ran into

Some challenges we ran into was having to learn HTML, CSS, and JavaScript because this was our first hackathon. Time became a real challenge for us and since it was our first hackathon we didn't know how to utilize our time efficiently. Also, having to combine all three of our codes proved to be another challenge as well.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that we were able to create a functioning game in the time that we were given. Also, since this is our first hackathon we are proud that we actually got through it without giving up.

What we learned

We learned that a hackathon takes a lot of time management and a lot of commitment. We had to be at our bests in order to complete this project. Teamwork is also a crucial factor to a hackathon, dividing and conquering the work and making sure everyone is doing their role was a new experience.

What's next for Astro Race Galaxy

We want to put this game on all platforms: computer, mobile, console, etc. Doing this will help the game reach more kids and for them to become more inspired by space. Also, instead of just having one game, it could be the start of a hub of games geared to space to really get kids to learn more than just trivia. There could be reaction base games, space science games, etc.
