Inspiration
Inspired by VR games that use diegetic locomotion such as Echo Arena, Gorilla Tag, and Orion Drift--Astro Penguin is an experimental, single-player platformer that provides a variety of natural feeling movement options for a player, e.g. sliding, gliding, flapping, carving, rockets, swimming, surfing, all with an emphasis on feeling completely natural.
What it does
Astro Penguin is meant to be a completely natural-feeling diegetic locomotion platformer for VR. The player can their body in a variety of intuitive movements to traverse levels. Players can also use their voice to speak their companion penguin astronaut
How we built it
- Made with Godot
- Generative AI for voice, music, sound effects, backgrounds, and 3d assets
Challenges we ran into
Natural-feeling diegetic locomotion requires a long process of continuous iteration and subtle refinement. It is really hard but worth it
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Flying feels really, really good
What we learned
In play-testing, players really love talking to their fellow penguin astronaut, Captain Pebblesworth
What's next for Astro Penguin
The next level planned will debut rail grinding. I look forward to continue experimenting with more locomotion possibilities
